What is The WildLab?
The WildLab is pioneering the use of mobile devices for citizen science projects. Using GPS/LBS products, the WildLab's platform delivers real-time scientific information for education, research, and entertainment applications.
What Powers The WildLab?
The WildLab currently uses uLocate's whereTM platform with NAVTEQTM maps to provide the point-of-interest information from The WildLab database.
How Does It Work?
To help birders keep track of their observations, the database contains a list of birding "HotSpots." From them, birders can make observations over time. Each observation contains bird species, date, time, and the number sighted. The main The WildLab screen contains a "Sightings" section and a "HotSpots" section.
What are Sightings and HotSpots?
The "Sightings" section allows the user to:
- See species recently recorded near the user's current location.
- Enter a new observation for the current location. If there is no birding HotSpot there, a new one is created.
The "HotSpots" section allows the user to:
- View all HotSpots; green HotSpots are HotSpots the user created, red HotSpots are ones created by other users.
- Create a new HotSpot at the location specified on the main page.
How Can I Use It?
The WildLab Web portal allows users to sign in, share information, and view their observations and those of other birders.
When Will It Be On My Phone?
The WildLab plans on launching globally, to a world-wide base of wildlife watchers that number in the tens of millions. The WildLab plans to offer turn-by-turn functionality, where available, for additional eco-tourism applications.
Will The WildLab Work In Cities?
Even in densely populated cities, it is possible to observe nature at work. Pedestrian maps and road maps are integral to our offerings. The ability to see buildings, even in 3D, could help enrich the experience (i.e., nests on the tops of tall buildings in NYC), as well as special point of interest information. The maps will not only be accessed through mobile devices, but also on the Web, where each person has their own personal account and database of observations.
Where Is The WildLab Headed?
The volume of people using the application we anticipate to be in the millions, starting with the U.S., Europe, Central and South America, southeast Asia, and Australia. We plan on launching soon on Where, after the current private beta is finished. We are competing in The 25th Annual World Series on Birding on Cape May NJ on May 10.
